NATIONAL WOMEN IN AI MONTH

National AI Month is the entire month of October and a time to showcase women role models by promoting their success in the next industrial revolution--AI. This month, we encourage more women to pursue career paths in AI technology.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is one of the fastest growing industries today. However, like so many other fields, there seems to be a lack of gender diversity in computer science. In fact, only 22.3% of women receive computer science degrees, with 22% of those women represented in current AI careers. On National Women in AI Month, let's provide a platform to propel women and the industry towards a fairer tech sector.

The Untapped Talent Pool

The demand for AI specialists continues to surge, yet enterprises across various industries today face a common barrier to achieving their AI goals—talent. According to a 2020 LinkedIn report, the role of Artificial Intelligence Specialist is the top emerging job in the United States, with hiring growth for this role increasing by 74% annually over the past four years. With the increasing demand for AI skills, organizations are ramping up their AI hiring efforts while simultaneously looking to diversify their talent sources.

Despite the growing demand for AI expertise, one significant talent pool—women—remains largely untapped. In 2020, women represented roughly 47% of the US labor force. Furthermore, in 2019, women received the majority of graduate certificates, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees from US institutions. However, according to a 2020 World Economic Forum report, women comprise only 26% of data and AI positions in the workforce. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI’s 2021 AI Index Report found that women constitute just 16% of tenure-track faculty focused on AI globally.

On National Women in AI Month, we are encouraging women to participate fully in the AI revolution is so important. By supporting women in AI, we are fostering gender diversity and enriching the field with women’s diverse perspectives and talents.
