Without them, our nation's ports, transit systems, K-12 schools, government facilities, and utilities would fail to operate properly. What is a security technician? A security technician is a trained individual who installs, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of security systems. A security technician can easily work in a variety of settings, including residential or commercial settings.
What does a security technician do? When a security technician receives their education and training, they are taught work in all types of scenarios. In fact, an average day for a security technician consists of working in a home and in a business setting. Job duties of a security technician vary and depend on the environment of the customer. Basic skills include:
Identify and troubleshoot hardware and software problems within a network.
Install emergency programs to help systems recover from viruses and malware.
Collaborate with an IT team about support strategies to carry out business needs.
Analyze and respond to problems found within computer systems.
Collects data and provides reports about trends.
Know the latest technologies to avoid data theft.

We've determined that 35.8% of security technicians have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 3.7% of security technicians have master's degrees. Even though some security technicians have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

In 2022, the Security Industry Association (SIA) and National Day Calendar began collaborating to establish National Security Technician Day. Beginning in 2023, National Security Technician Day will be celebrated each year on January 23.
