June is National Portuguese Heritage Month on the National Day Calendar to celebrate the rich cultural history behind Portuguese-Americans and the vast contributions they have made to the country.

Nearly 1.4 million Portuguese Americans live in the U.S. sharing their vibrant communities and cultural traditions as part of American life. Portuguese Culture

Portuguese culture is all about hospitality. They love to bring friends and family together to share their festive stance on life. Often hosting vibrant festivals and celebrations, the Portuguese culture invites anyone with open arms to join in their heritage and learn about them firsthand. They love to welcome new people into their homes and neighborhoods by sharing the love have for their history and traditions.

Religion plays an important role in Portuguese culture. In fact, many of their celebrations are centered around the Holy Spirit. One of the most famous festivals in the U.S. is the Festa do Espirito Santo, otherwise known as the Holy Ghost Festival. This festival has a rich history honoring to Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal (1271-1336).

Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal was canonized into sainthood by Pope Urban VII on June 24, 1626 for her work with the poor. Interestingly, she was also known to turn bread into flowers, which became known as spiritually divine act that prompted her sainthood with the Catholic Church. Today, the Holy Ghost Festival is celebrated throughout the U.S. in Portuguese communities. The festival celebrates with parades, feast, music, and dance that showcases the beautiful history of Portuguese Americans and includes how religion has shaped their heritage.

5 Popular Portuguese Foods

Portuguese cuisine offers a vast assortment of flavorful food. In fact, many dishes are known to be some of best in the world. Whether you enjoy sandwiches, seafood, soups, or a decadent meat dish, Portuguese food is a blend of amazing ingredients that will have you wishing for more.

  1. The Francesinha sandwich from Porto is a meat-lover's dream. The sandwich is made with layers of steak, ham, and sausage, smothered in a decadent tomato beer sauce then topped with melted cheese.

  2. Caldo verde is a rich and hearty soups made of potatoes and kale. Many times, chourico sausage is added, bringing this comfort food to a whole other level of flavor.

  3. Cozido à portuguesa is a traditional stew that is popular for special occasions and family gatherings. Made of a variety of meats, sausages, vegetables, and rice, Cozido à portuguesa is filling and requires a big appetite.

  4. Pastel de nata is a creamy custard tart that is a must try for anyone who has never had a Portuguese dessert. It's a creamy, delicate, and sweet dessert with a simple presentation that will have you wondering why you haven't tried this delight sooner.

  5. Bolo de bolacha is another traditional Portuguese dessert made with a simple cake batter, crushed cookies, condensed milk, and butter. This beautifully assembled dessert is the epiphany of a delicate desert with a big taste of Portuguese culture.

Music and dance are a part of every culture in the world and Portuguese culture is no different. In fact, Portuguese music is known to be energetic and infectious that creates a welcoming atmosphere for anyone. For instance, the upbeat rhythm and sound of Rancho Folclórico is filled with instruments, percussion, vibrant costumes and amazing footwork that captivate spectators. It's easy to become enticed to join in the fun dancing when watching traditional dancers.

5 Important Dates in Portuguese American History

  1. In 1634, Mathias de Sousa became the first documented Portuguese resident in what would later become the U.S.

  2. Azorean immigrants established the first community on Rhode Island in 1733.

  3. Portuguese Jews established the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island in 1763. The synagogue is not only the oldest synagogue in the U.S., it is also still standing today.

  4. During the early 1800s, Portuguese immigrants grew in the California, bringing laborers and minors in large scales. Their skills contributed to the extensive economic growth during the Gold Rush and for the whaling and fishing industries.

  5. Early 1900 history shows Portuguese communities growing throughout the U.S., including in major cities such as New York, Boston, California, and Massachusetts.

Taking a dance class to learn about the dramatic movements will give you an appreciation not only Portuguese dances, but it will also let you experience the passionate music, too.

A BRIEF HISTORY:
NATIONAL PORTUGUESE HERITAGE MONTH

California Representatives Jim Costa and David Valadao introduced a resolution in 2023 to designate June as Portuguese National Heritage Month. The resolution honors contributions made by Portuguese Americans to the nation. U.S. Representatives Costa and Valadao also serve as co-chairs of the Congressional Portuguese Caucus for the 118th Congress of the United States.

We Love American Heritage

In 2024, National Day Calendar decided to honor the resolution made by Reps. Costa and Valadao by creating National Portuguese Heritage Month. The creation of this National Month was based on the recommendation by PALCUS to add the information to our calendar. We agreed the recommendation did in fact fall in line with other heritage months we celebrate on the National Day Calendar.
