CANADIAN ENVIRONMENT WEEK

Each year during the week of June 5, Canadian Environment Week focuses attention on conservation and preservation of natural and precious resources. The observance encourages awareness and action to protect the natural environment. It also draws attention to environmental issues such as marine pollution, air pollution, and deforestation.

#CanadianEnvironmentWeek

Canadian Environment is a time for all Canadians to participate in discussions regarding biodiversity, climate change, and protecting natural spaces. During this time, Canadians are also encouraged to increase the use of sustainable products, participate in recycling, and learn to make their homes more efficient.

Organizers and private citizens alike participate in the week-long observance in various ways. Some may invest in renewable energy or clean up their neighborhoods. Others may rededicate themselves to reusing, recycling, and repurposing while leaving a smaller carbon footprint.

CANADIAN ENVIRONMENT WEEK HISTORY

The Canadian Commons created Canadian Environment Week in 1971 to bring more awareness to Canadians regarding pollution issues. The first observances took place in October and in 1982 the celebration moved to the week of June 5. The date corresponds with the United Nations proclamation of World Environment Day.
